Walmart Worship, II

September 1, 2010
After my search for salt , I put the bags in my cart and begin to make the long trek back to the grocery side (where, of course, I parked). Out of the corner of my eye, I saw bundles of firewood on the shelf. Walmart is now selling firewood. With

Walmart Worship, I

Walmart Worship, I By Jon Nicol   |  September 1, 2010
I needed softner salt. My town's water can turn a black t-shirt charcoal gray in a single wash. A musician needs to protect his black t-shirts. My wife needed some spices for something she was making. Two diverse items + one trip = Walmart.   Crud.

emotional energy (i.e. actually caring)

August 31, 2010
I had two restaurant experiences lately. One was at a pizza chain with my wife and kids. My kids are, well, kids. Our server was, well, not there. I waited tables in college, and even had a short stint in my 30s, so I have a tremendous amount of sympathy

The Music Stand & the GPS

July 30, 2010
During worship, charts on the music stand are a lot like a GPS. It'll show you where to go, give you instructions, and is easy to keep looking at.  The issue arises when you continue to keep looking at it:   A worship musician with

Dangerously Competent

July 23, 2010
In my early ministry years (20s) I used to hear these 'old' worship leaders (probably mid 30s, 40 tops) that would talk about how they'd take people with great attitudes over talent. I would think, 'Whatever. Great attitudes don't build a smokin' band.'

grace waits

May 3, 2010
At the moment temptation pulls us in, grace is there. Somehow we think we need to grit our teeth and try to withstand it. We need to prove we are worthy of grace. Grace just waits. When we have sunk into the comfortable company of a familiar friend--that

the Ministry Monster, part 1

March 17, 2010
Does anyone else feel like we've created a monster that we can't afford to feed? Let's face it, we all want a worship band that sounds like they hang out in U2's basement jamming with Coldplay after having a Bible study with the guys from Hil

Wii Bowling with Andy Stanley

Everyone blathers on about resolutions for a couple weeks in the New Year. Typically, I give most of mine up for Lent. (actually, if they last that long it's something of a miracle...) I got Andy Stanley's The Principle of the Path for Christmas. His p

KIND v NICE

KIND v NICE By Jon Nicol   |  May 14, 2009
There were two musicians that I worked with in a previous ministry. Looking back, I made two different choices: I chose to protect the feelings of one and speak truth to the other. I chose to "like" one (and really, to have him like me), and to show love to the other, and risked him not liking me.
