02/06/2012 11:29:58 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: yes
02/06/2012 11:30:05 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: affirmative
02/06/2012 11:31:11 KentNZ from Auckland, New Zealand: Hey from New Zealand...
02/06/2012 11:34:09 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: THANK YOU!
02/06/2012 11:37:44 nathan hannum from hudsonville, MI: hahahaha
02/06/2012 11:37:55 Josh Britton from Columbus, IN: people expecting to actually encounter the living God
02/06/2012 11:38:01 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: it keeps your worship team from focusing on details and allows them to worship
02/06/2012 11:38:14 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: not allowing the mechanics get in the way
02/06/2012 11:38:16 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: Preparation can minimize distractions during worship
02/06/2012 11:38:18 Dennis Long from Grand Rapids, Michigan: prep will allow for the freedom to worship
02/06/2012 11:38:27 Kevin Cook from Tampa, FL: God seems to always exceed our expectations... prep. expresses what we expect
02/06/2012 11:38:27 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: preparing the space, as well.
02/06/2012 11:38:31 Jamie Pike from Cleveland Ohio: know your lyrics and meditate on them too
02/06/2012 11:38:36 john narraway from Living Room: Being prepared help you be free to be lead by the Spirit. It is a good morale booster for the Worship team.
02/06/2012 11:38:55 will click from ATL: one would be more able to focus on worship rather than focusing on the band's mistakes
02/06/2012 11:39:11 Melanie Hensley from US: knowing what you're doing instead of practicing what you're doing during rehearsal time
02/06/2012 11:40:05 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: it's a great worship time for the team so they can better enabled to lead on Sunday morning
02/06/2012 11:41:15 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: is that Dana Carvey?
02/06/2012 11:41:28 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: =)
02/06/2012 11:43:58 Kevin Cook from Tampa, FL: Isn't that special?
02/06/2012 11:44:49 Dave Helmuth from Lancaster, PA: Another way to talk about the formula for change: Dissatisfaction + Vision + First Steps > Resistance
02/06/2012 11:46:30 Lloyd Brownell from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada: Our congregation is not as expressive as our worhsip team(s)? How do we lead them to be more expressive and buy into a culture of worship?
02/06/2012 11:47:59 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: we just moved to in ear last month... they didn't care about thier personal gain, just to know that it would sound better in the mains (we were overpushing our monitors)
02/06/2012 11:50:22 will click from ATL: it also depends on the congregation as to how fast you can implement change
02/06/2012 11:50:45 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: death by chocolate? ;-)
02/06/2012 11:53:41 Dennis Long from Grand Rapids, Michigan: If we want them to bleed, we have to really gush!
02/06/2012 11:54:13 Dennis Long from Grand Rapids, Michigan: It really helps if the Pastors/leaders are expressive...
02/06/2012 11:54:23 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: we need to be careful about being legalistic about being expressive....one doesn't have to be your kind of expressive to be worshipping
02/06/2012 11:55:10 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I agree, but we as leaders have to give those who want to be expressive permission to do so. I'm not naturally one to raise my hands, but I do while leading in order to give permission for others to do so.
02/06/2012 11:55:43 Dave Helmuth from Lancaster, PA: hey, some people don't even know how to express affection for God...they were just never taught how. Guess what is in your job description :)
02/06/2012 11:56:06 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: Thanks, Martha- I've been wresting with that this week!
02/06/2012 11:57:56 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: how long do you take for run-thru on Sun>?
02/06/2012 11:58:10 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: Great distinctions between these parts of the preparation. When this happens for us, we come to worship much more "prepared" to worship, which is the main thing!
02/06/2012 11:58:35 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: We rehearse on Thurs for 1 1/2 to 2 hours and on Sunday our warmup runs about 30-45 minutes.
02/06/2012 11:58:51 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: pretty much same as martha
02/06/2012 11:59:05 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: we do
02/06/2012 11:59:08 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: same as martha
02/06/2012 11:59:09 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: nope
02/06/2012 11:59:14 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: They did before I got here and I changed that first thing
02/06/2012 11:59:14 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: not very well
02/06/2012 11:59:17 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: yes, It's difficult
02/06/2012 11:59:25 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: one of our sites sometimes does that. not the best situation when there are tech troubles.
02/06/2012 11:59:25 Kevin Cook from Tampa, FL: Weds choir/pt, Sunday band
02/06/2012 11:59:30 gayle graening from nashville tn: depends on how many of the small choir shows up on Wed night!!
02/06/2012 11:59:36 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: and only for about 45 mins!
02/06/2012 11:59:41 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: I inherited a worship team here that just don't seem to be able to even remember one day to teh next what they are supposed to do. Is that just a "time heals" kind of thing where I just need to keep encourageing them to take notes in rehearsal/etc?
02/06/2012 11:59:42 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: We haveThursday evening vocal and band seperate, then together. Sunday morning runthrough
02/06/2012 11:59:51 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: often, those sat night reh's last for a bit longer--2-3 hours sometimes
02/06/2012 12:00:04 Kevin Cook from Tampa, FL: Go without a team for a short season Autumn...
02/06/2012 12:00:28 Kevin Cook from Tampa, FL: ?
02/06/2012 12:00:30 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: a short pencil is better than a long memory
02/06/2012 12:00:38 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: yeah, our sunday rehearsal looks exactly like wednesday rehearsal righ tnow...frustrating
02/06/2012 12:01:13 Kevin Cook from Tampa, FL: A. Stanley..."Systems fail, people seldom do."
02/06/2012 12:01:18 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: thanks!
02/06/2012 12:01:55 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: I would...but we have 3 campuses...tha'ts a lot for one person to do! :)
02/06/2012 12:02:42 Christopher Ford from UK: do you think there's differences in the importance of practicing depending on factors like size of church...value put on seamless excelence compared to spontenaity?
02/06/2012 12:02:44 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: also...can we get a copy of your ppt presentation at the end of this?
02/06/2012 12:03:13 Chris Platt from Antioch, CA: one thing i've found is to NOT ask the question "does anyone need to work on any particular part of this song?" they'll almost always say no even when there are definite issues. be proactive in pointing out and reworking trouble spots
02/06/2012 12:03:15 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: practice allows spontaneity
02/06/2012 12:03:53 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: you can "practice" sponteneity.
02/06/2012 12:04:00 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: yep
02/06/2012 12:04:24 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: team learns to go where the worship leader goes through no-verbals, etc.
02/06/2012 12:04:38 john narraway from Living Room: We rarely do whole songs during warm-up on Sunday, just enough to get warm and to remind everyone of the feel we are going for with each song.
02/06/2012 12:04:39 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: makes it easier to accomplish on SUnday AM
02/06/2012 12:04:45 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: I agree, Jeff...a lot of times I will tell my team we're doing one thing and then switch it up on them on purpose in rehearsal just to see how they respond.
02/06/2012 12:05:25 Christopher Ford from UK: cool, any tips on practicing sponteneity?
02/06/2012 12:06:12 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: start slow with a song they know very well like Open the Eyes of My Heart and then practice going to different parts of he song on the fly
02/06/2012 12:06:18 Chris Platt from Antioch, CA: we did that song a couple weeks ago and had the EXACT same problem 8-)
02/06/2012 12:06:23 (Private to Presenters) - Jerry Thomason from Charleston Illinois: ugh, missed the first part of it! will a recording be available?
02/06/2012 12:06:59 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: I try hard not to do every song the same way all teh time. just keeps my team and the cogregation from getting "used to" one way of singing it.
02/06/2012 12:07:01 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: even take time to run through simple chord patterns for extended worship times with an underscore.
02/06/2012 12:07:49 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: no vocals per se
02/06/2012 12:09:18 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: we do about 5 per week and have a 12-13 week repeat pattern
02/06/2012 12:10:02 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: do you have a practical way to keep track of which songs are on which list and how many times you've done them, etc?
02/06/2012 12:10:09 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: Autumn, does that seem to keep the congregation from being able to enter into worship.....throwing them off?
02/06/2012 12:10:14 Jennifer Montes from Mission, TX: about how long do use a song before retiring it?
02/06/2012 12:10:47 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: Got it! Thanks...
02/06/2012 12:10:50 Melanie Hensley from US: I look back through my powerpoint song sets in order to see a pattern of song sets
02/06/2012 12:11:13 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: if you use PCO, you can track your setlist schedules there.
02/06/2012 12:11:28 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: Planning Center Online
02/06/2012 12:11:29 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: not really, as long as you're keeping the songs familiar. For example, a "classic" like How Great is our God I will just do teh chorus/bridge one set or leave out verse 2, etc...it's about training people to worship, and not to read lyrics off the screen :)
02/06/2012 12:12:04 john narraway from Living Room: How well does your system work when you are trying to plan a service around a theme/sermon/teaching?
02/06/2012 12:12:46 Christopher Ford from UK: We have a rota of 8 worship leaders who choose songs for their sunday. Does this fit with a rotation system as I think they would feel like they're being told waht to lead with.?
02/06/2012 12:14:04 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: we have a standard "form" but the team has been trained to not get too comfortable wih=th any set way. (see prior conversation) Doesn't change drastically but does require an attentiveness to worship; not just a "rote performance"
02/06/2012 12:14:06 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: brian, just like he is saying now...when you ahve a standard form that you default to, it helps your team and congregation to know basically where you are going
02/06/2012 12:14:44 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: do you have a practical way to keep track of which songs are on which list and how many times you've done them, etc?
02/06/2012 12:14:53 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: Autumn, it sounded like you were saying just the opposite...that you kept changing it up
02/06/2012 12:14:53 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: each of our sites/worship leadewrs has the option of doing whatever form is best for their group of people.
02/06/2012 12:15:14 Christopher Ford from UK: my experience (as a drummer) is I'm happy with structured but also with flexible - as long as the structure is stated and any variations are well communicated mid song. It's not very often I end up at the end of a big fill thinking where's the band gone!
02/06/2012 12:16:47 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: Bria, yeah, I do chang eit up, but when your team knows the basic structure of the song, you can make changes without confusing them. You just have to have a way to communicate when you're doing something different.
02/06/2012 12:17:38 Lloyd Brownell from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada: What if I can't find an MP3 or a link on youtube that is in the right key?
02/06/2012 12:17:50 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: via PCO, the worship leaders should be putting setlists up at least two weeks in advance so people have time to practice before rehearsal. Not everyone has time to cram on Weds before Thurs rehearsal.
02/06/2012 12:18:00 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: transposr.com
02/06/2012 12:18:13 Christopher Ford from UK: any copywrite issues with providing MP3 or cd to the whole team?
02/06/2012 12:19:07 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: http://rehearsal.ccli.com/
02/06/2012 12:19:08 Christopher Ford from UK: Cool, that could be really useful
02/06/2012 12:19:31 steph: is 2 weeks in advance realistic?
02/06/2012 12:19:38 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: my team HATES it when I go too drastic.
02/06/2012 12:19:50 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I try to plan 6-8 weeks in advance
02/06/2012 12:19:59 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: if your preaching team has planned far enough in advance, it is doable.
02/06/2012 12:20:14 Amy Quillin from San Antonio, TX: our church plans 4 weeks out
02/06/2012 12:20:30 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: my comment
02/06/2012 12:20:38 steph: yes
02/06/2012 12:21:01 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: my pastor plans sermons one year in advance. That gives our arts team plenty of time to perpare ahead. I plan worship sets quarterly
02/06/2012 12:21:29 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: I usually plan out 6-8 weeks in advance, but I make changes as things get closer--that way, most of the plan is set and the changes are relatively minor...
02/06/2012 12:21:33 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: i'm jealous of you all with preplanning pastors!
02/06/2012 12:21:40 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: as long as we sing about Jesus... ;-)
02/06/2012 12:21:45 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Takes work to train them
02/06/2012 12:22:00 Christopher Ford from UK: yeah, we're pretty much week by week!!
02/06/2012 12:22:01 Chris Platt from Antioch, CA: i've been pretty much planning week to week, am trying to start planning 4 weeks out. i to attempt to plan with the service theme when i can, but unfortunately i don't have the sermon notes ahead of time most weeks, usually just titles
02/06/2012 12:22:23 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: mine didn't use to plan ahead...but after taking time to explain to him all the things we COULD do if we knew ahead what he is preaching on, he understood the value of it
02/06/2012 12:22:28 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: LOL Martha
02/06/2012 12:22:29 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: A week ahead would be a luxury!
02/06/2012 12:22:31 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I now sit in weekly planning meetings with both pastors so I can push them to look ahead
02/06/2012 12:22:54 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: really, he just plans sermon topics ahead and writes his sermons the week or 2 before. but the topic is all I need to create a good atmosphere adn special things to fit in
02/06/2012 12:23:10 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: We ALL of our music by Wed/Thurs, and expect a change at practice on Saturday!
02/06/2012 12:23:13 Christopher Ford from UK: Would be great to have a worship pastor who can more easily be involved in that kind of planning...
02/06/2012 12:23:20 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: same here Autumn. We get abstracts that will be fleshed out later
02/06/2012 12:23:35 Christopher Ford from UK: Any thoughts on how big a church needs to be to justify having a worship pastor??
02/06/2012 12:23:40 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: being humble when you aproach him helps too. :)
02/06/2012 12:23:44 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: ANd I used the word "practice" on pupose.
02/06/2012 12:24:05 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Being full-time helps alot
02/06/2012 12:24:26 Melanie Hensley from US: I just feel that planning months and so many weeks in advance doesn't leave much room for the HOLY SPIRIT to move freely - it just seems too planned and who am I to know what GOD wants to do so many months from now. These, of course, are just my thoughts. I've never been in a church with such preparation, so it's probably just what I'm used to.
02/06/2012 12:24:51 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: full time would help...honestly, though, I'm not in a large church...we just work hard in the time we have and plan ahead so things can go smoothly
02/06/2012 12:24:53 steph: we rehearse on Monday for the following Thu/Sun services. One week ahead to plan suits us.
02/06/2012 12:25:13 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: We plan out ideas and themes but there is a lot of flexibility in having an outline
02/06/2012 12:25:19 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: The Holy Spirit can also move in your preparation time =)
02/06/2012 12:25:32 steph: by thursday!
02/06/2012 12:26:03 steph: just kidding. They are pretty good at remembering
02/06/2012 12:26:03 Kevin Cook from Tampa, FL: Planning is a discipline, not a spiritual activity IMO. When I plan well I allow my pastor security with a plan and carved out time to be creative. I PLAN to BE CREATIVE and it works well for us. May not work for everyone, but it works for us.
02/06/2012 12:26:06 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: Melanie-God always honors perparation. when your preparation is led by the holy spirit, it's amazing how many times things fall into place that you never could have known
02/06/2012 12:26:37 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: I find that planning ahead really allows me to plan an arc to the church's worship--a "metanarrative" if you will--but with the more immediate changes, then I can address the sermon topics, other changes...
02/06/2012 12:26:53 Kevin Cook from Tampa, FL: Exactly, Scott. Love it!
02/06/2012 12:26:59 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: -- will the chat be part of the recording, too ? ---
02/06/2012 12:27:03 Melanie Hensley from US: understood
02/06/2012 12:27:18 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: plan a lot of times depending on who is on the team sometimes
02/06/2012 12:27:39 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: agreed Jef
02/06/2012 12:27:46 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Jeff
02/06/2012 12:28:06 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: and I've found that often times, that arc--deeply rooted in prayer--surprisingly follows what the pastor is doing anyway...
02/06/2012 12:28:30 Christopher Ford from UK: that's a great point for preparation, but some of our worship leaders aren't musicians. How can we help them with that kind of planning and preparation?
02/06/2012 12:28:38 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: amazing how God can design services around our limitations
02/06/2012 12:29:17 steph: i agree Martha - I see God doing that so many times
02/06/2012 12:29:17 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: Great, thanks, because there are some good nuggets here!
02/06/2012 12:29:25 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: awesome. would love to connect with some of the chat participants later.
02/06/2012 12:29:31 Christopher Ford from UK: Martha - Praise God - that's what grace is a about... phew!!
02/06/2012 12:29:39 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: :)-
02/06/2012 12:29:49 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: it's in my worship leader word-a-day calendar
02/06/2012 12:30:07 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: ha.
02/06/2012 12:30:08 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: Hi Jeff, looks like we are only about 40 minutes apart
02/06/2012 12:30:17 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: yes yes yes!
02/06/2012 12:30:30 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: stlukeaa.org
02/06/2012 12:30:53 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: eric@mhcgb.com
02/06/2012 12:31:22 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: Wow - two other Michigander's on here! Too bad you're across the state!!
02/06/2012 12:31:30 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I'm the Director of Worship Arts
02/06/2012 12:31:47 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: It's only about a 2 hour drive not too bad
02/06/2012 12:31:48 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: my title too!
02/06/2012 12:32:01 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: mine, too!
02/06/2012 12:32:08 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: Yeah - I've actually been to St. Luke's AA
02/06/2012 12:32:20 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Covers more than just music - I'm all about the entire environment
02/06/2012 12:32:33 (Private to Presenters) - Jerry Thomason from Charleston Illinois: Worship Teams Coordinator. Can you tell I'm a volunteer? haha
02/06/2012 12:32:45 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: Matthew - awesome. grew up in Greenville
02/06/2012 12:32:52 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: Small world!
02/06/2012 12:33:00 Christopher Ford from UK: yes thanks, need to work out who can do that. cheers
02/06/2012 12:33:04 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: MAtthew send me your eamil plz
02/06/2012 12:33:12 Priscilla Ozodo from Rochester NY: My Church has both a vocal and Instrumental worship leaders. We meet during the week to ensure good communication between vocalists and band during rehearsals
02/06/2012 12:33:19 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: matthew.starner@journeywired.org
02/06/2012 12:34:27 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: thanks for the chats and connectins! Gotta bolt to another meeting. Let's do it again
02/06/2012 12:34:42 Jeff Greunke from ann arbor: looking forward to the playback and links
02/06/2012 12:34:42 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Bye Jeff
02/06/2012 12:35:02 (Private to Presenters) - Jerry Thomason from Charleston Illinois: Anybody know of a good, safe, worship leader chat room?
02/06/2012 12:36:21 Christopher Ford from UK: yeah, I REALLY struggle with the vocals. I 'lead/coordinate' the band but am the drummer. REally difficult to lead from the backline and I'm tuned into the dynamics and rhythm so easily neglect the vocals - am completely dependent on someone else in the team to take a lead on this area.
02/06/2012 12:37:01 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I have my husband, whom I trust, listen to the entire group and let me know what he hears from the congregation's perspective. It helps me know what I'm missing
02/06/2012 12:37:56 Christopher Ford from UK: thats a great idea to have someone 'out front' at practices to hear the full picture, cheers martha
02/06/2012 12:37:58 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: AMEN!
02/06/2012 12:38:04 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: "no-noodle" love it!
02/06/2012 12:38:55 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: Love the no-noodle!
02/06/2012 12:38:58 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Wish I had some young players . . .
02/06/2012 12:38:59 Christopher Ford from UK: no-noodle? have fried rice instead!!
02/06/2012 12:39:04 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: drummers disease!
02/06/2012 12:39:15 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: I just started a no noodle policy too and my band actually loves catching each other playing around and implementing it themselves
02/06/2012 12:39:28 Chris Platt from Antioch, CA: i've got a 7th grader on drums now, he rocks! been playing with us here and there for a couple years and now he's gotten the chance to move up to the main slot
02/06/2012 12:39:28 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: We talked about a noodle fine jar
02/06/2012 12:39:33 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: much better than me dictating it! :)
02/06/2012 12:39:45 will click from ATL: noodle? never heard it called that
02/06/2012 12:39:53 Melanie Hensley from US: here's one....what about cell phones at rehearsal????
02/06/2012 12:40:10 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: I should start one of those jars, then I would have budget! :)
02/06/2012 12:40:10 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: I have a very strict rule...no phones. just turn it off for an hour
02/06/2012 12:40:12 steph: i have the no noodle policy - it does disturb the practice.
02/06/2012 12:40:17 will click from ATL: yankee thing?
02/06/2012 12:40:19 will click from ATL: jk
02/06/2012 12:40:21 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: How do the lead players find their creative parts without noodling a bit? Or do they just match a studio version?
02/06/2012 12:40:25 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I'm from the south
02/06/2012 12:40:26 Christopher Ford from UK: yeah - we call it noodling too
02/06/2012 12:40:27 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: yep
02/06/2012 12:40:36 steph: yes we do
02/06/2012 12:40:44 Chris Platt from Antioch, CA: we lovingly mock people's ringtones when phones go off during rehearsals... seems to work... 8-)
02/06/2012 12:40:48 steph: top and tail
02/06/2012 12:40:49 Christopher Ford from UK: not heard that one!
02/06/2012 12:41:04 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: No Will, I'm in Peachtree City and we use that term
02/06/2012 12:41:13 nathan hannum from hudsonville, MI: good question from Randy above
02/06/2012 12:41:44 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Do you let your vocalist have music?
02/06/2012 12:41:46 nathan hannum from hudsonville, MI: what about lead players who need to figure out some creative parts for our band's particular arrangement of a song?
02/06/2012 12:41:48 (Private to Presenters) - Jerry Thomason from Charleston Illinois: I have been successful at recruiting high school and college/young folks to play along side us more "seasoned" players. The secret is support and relationship.... they love to know that you support their musical endeavoers... go to their coffeehouse gigs, show up at their outside band practice, take a group of them out to coffee just to talk, etc.
02/06/2012 12:41:53 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: Randy, I tell my team that tha'ts why you practice ahead. there are times that people need time to figure something out, but I just say, communicate it when you need that time.
02/06/2012 12:42:24 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: But often, practicing creative parts by yourself is not the BEST way to figure it out....
02/06/2012 12:42:35 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: agreed
02/06/2012 12:42:40 Chris Platt from Antioch, CA: my lead guitar player comes to rehearsals with leads aalready learned. SOOOO nice...
02/06/2012 12:42:45 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I had to take music away from the vocalists except when learning a brand new song - they were becoming stand divers and wouldn't look up
02/06/2012 12:42:53 nathan hannum from hudsonville, MI: only a couple of spots above my post
02/06/2012 12:42:58 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: randy's question: How do the lead players find their creative parts without noodling a bit? Or do they just match a studio version?
02/06/2012 12:43:21 Terri Tenkorang from Cheshire UK: Steph contact me if you want I am on my name@hotmail.com
02/06/2012 12:43:47 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: We have a separate session to work on noodling improvising
02/06/2012 12:43:56 steph: i agree with that Martha - i am considering doing the same during a rehearsal - removing the words unless they don't know the song.
02/06/2012 12:44:10 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: We have a confidence monitor so they don't need the words
02/06/2012 12:44:29 steph: a confidence monitor?
02/06/2012 12:44:32 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: sheet music
02/06/2012 12:44:36 nathan hannum from hudsonville, MI: maybe we could record our rehearsals so lead players can take that home and figure out creative parts based on our band's arrangement/feel?
02/06/2012 12:44:42 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: Words on the back wall is a gift from GOD!
02/06/2012 12:44:48 nathan hannum from hudsonville, MI: hahhahahaahahhaha
02/06/2012 12:45:15 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: at least their heads are up
02/06/2012 12:45:40 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: is it too much to ask vocalists to memorize songs? especially ones that you do often?
02/06/2012 12:45:40 steph: thanks Terri i will
02/06/2012 12:46:00 Melanie Hensley from US: I agree Martha....I'm so tired of the vocalists that need music for songs they have known for years. I've started looking at some and just saying, "You know it."
02/06/2012 12:46:40 Christopher Ford from UK: practicing without words/music is really valuable - people will often be surprises about how much they remember
02/06/2012 12:46:51 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I've even challenged them to learn new songs without music. that gives us more flexibility to make some of them our own (and honestly sometimes more singable)
02/06/2012 12:47:09 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: that's a great idea, martha
02/06/2012 12:47:22 Christopher Ford from UK: for vocals - often a prompt for the first line of a verse will be enough to help them remember the rest of it too
02/06/2012 12:47:28 Melanie Hensley from US: You're right
02/06/2012 12:47:51 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: That is such a great help!
02/06/2012 12:47:58 steph: what would you do with a singer who is on the verge of a panic attack regarding removing the stand. Is it worth pursuing the "no stand on stage" goal?
02/06/2012 12:48:15 steph: music stand that is
02/06/2012 12:48:20 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: AS the worship leader and keyboard player I have a hard time, memorizing all the lyrics, chords and leading the team and congregation so I keep a shrunk down cheat sheet with chords taped to the top of my keyboard so I can galnce as needed.
02/06/2012 12:48:39 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I don't make the band go without music
02/06/2012 12:48:46 BobbyG: Maybe it'll help them to know that it's not about her, it's about God
02/06/2012 12:49:09 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: practice with vocals 30 min before the band joins us. I score thier parts (2 harmony/ 1 melody). I've found that just telling them what to do has saved soo much time!
02/06/2012 12:49:10 Melanie Hensley from US: Good idea, Eric. You lead same as me, but I've also astounded myself at what I remember insofar as vocals and chords
02/06/2012 12:49:11 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I've just started learning guitar so I sometimes have chord sheets, but I usually try to memorize so I can connect with the congregations
02/06/2012 12:49:27 BobbyG: When we focus on how we look or sound, we make about us.
02/06/2012 12:50:03 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: Anyone using OnSong on Ipads for the band? I have heard it is great
02/06/2012 12:50:10 Christopher Ford from UK: we've done that and was really good
02/06/2012 12:50:17 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I use FourScore or PCO Music Stand on my IPad
02/06/2012 12:50:25 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: what is OnSong?
02/06/2012 12:50:45 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: It is an App for Ipad
02/06/2012 12:50:51 Amy Quillin from San Antonio, TX: i love the "planning center online" music stand app for the ipad
02/06/2012 12:50:53 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: I use the ipad to control the monitor mixes via Presonus
02/06/2012 12:51:01 Amy Quillin from San Antonio, TX: it has been a GREAT rehearsal tool,
02/06/2012 12:51:38 Amy Quillin from San Antonio, TX: we also use it for our soundboard adjustments from the stage when needed
02/06/2012 12:51:45 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: I record vocal parts with keybaord and myself in Garageband, maybe an alto, just the chorus or bridge so vocalists can learn their parts.
02/06/2012 12:51:52 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: Lance - how is that going with the studiolive!?
02/06/2012 12:52:02 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: LOVE IT!!!
02/06/2012 12:52:03 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: LOVE PCO's music stand
02/06/2012 12:52:09 Amy Quillin from San Antonio, TX: yes you can
02/06/2012 12:52:11 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: Yes - take notes right on screen
02/06/2012 12:52:16 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: do most drummers use music or just play by ear?
02/06/2012 12:52:16 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: yes and it saves them for everyone
02/06/2012 12:52:21 will click from ATL: anything on the kindle that is helpful? the PCO app doesn't work as well on the FIRE
02/06/2012 12:52:23 Amy Quillin from San Antonio, TX: you can even play the mp3 right from the music stand app
02/06/2012 12:52:34 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: One of the most effective things I have done is learn to use a ton more positive feedback with the team members and chill on the little things that probably don't matter. I used to be into the live worship sounding like a studio recording.
02/06/2012 12:52:41 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: It also works in any web browser
02/06/2012 12:52:54 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: I have an android tablet and it works with that
02/06/2012 12:53:05 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: Lance - cool we have 2 16.4.2s (first production run) and have not been using them up to their capabilities!
02/06/2012 12:53:41 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: The updated version lets people control their own mix via their iphone
02/06/2012 12:53:53 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: I know this seems silly...but at our wednesday night rehearsal, I make a point to end at least 15 minutes "early" every other week or so. I've found that helps my team not begrudge being at the church late when they are tired
02/06/2012 12:54:04 Bruce Ray from Baton Rouge, LA USA: Yeah I saw that. (Presonus is right here in Baton Rouge)
02/06/2012 12:54:20 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: HUGE presonus and Line 6 fan!
02/06/2012 12:54:48 steph: Bob Kauflin worship training for Keyboard was excellent!
02/06/2012 12:55:10 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: We always adjourn to Applebee's for fellowship after rehearsal. It's our bonding time
02/06/2012 12:55:35 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: we do that too sometimes...if I have budget money, we'll buy everyone a milkshake or something
02/06/2012 12:55:37 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: Could you talk a bit more about rehearsal is relational....musically? Culturally? Spiritually?
02/06/2012 12:57:44 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Really???
02/06/2012 12:57:47 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: WHA?
02/06/2012 12:58:57 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: If someone is constantly late or unrprepared, I give the team my blessings to talk to each other privately and challenge each other kindly and with grace.
02/06/2012 12:59:31 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Having a team meeting and setting group ground rules helps too
02/06/2012 13:00:23 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: we have a team covenant that everyone signs (basics of show up on time, be prepared, etc). this gives the team responsibility to be held to and a place to call each other out if we're fallign short.
02/06/2012 13:00:42 Eric Anderson from Grand Blanc, MI: Have to go, it's been great
02/06/2012 13:00:45 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: Meeting with the team at my new ministry next week, and this stuff is a great reminder of where we can go in the training!
02/06/2012 13:01:03 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: Love the team covenant idea...works great!
02/06/2012 13:01:29 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: The group covenant makes it easier to confront someone if necessary
02/06/2012 13:02:35 will click from ATL: I've had people refuse to sign a "covenant" like it was an insult to their verbal commitment
02/06/2012 13:02:37 Melanie Hensley from US: Us either, but just finished your 10 steps devotional and they loved it!!!
02/06/2012 13:03:07 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: I've thought about using the Scripture readings for the upcoming week - giving some insight to why we're singing the songs we're singing
02/06/2012 13:03:25 will click from ATL: currently doing the "must haves" devotional. the team loves it!
02/06/2012 13:03:43 Christopher Ford from UK: cool I was thinking about using that, cheers will
02/06/2012 13:03:44 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: Will--I've had a few people respond that way too. The way we deal with that is just to say, hey, if you agree, then what's the big deal of signign it. we make our worship team a part of the "leaders" group of the church and it's a requirement of leaders too. helps them to see it not as a negative thing, but as a privilage
02/06/2012 13:04:47 will click from ATL: yeah it was actually a youth team member not a worship team member. that person is no longer a youth leader because of it
02/06/2012 13:05:16 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: bummer. it's never fun when things like that happen
02/06/2012 13:05:54 Christopher Ford from UK: how do you deal with it when someone does as for prayer for a random person - I find once we start praying we can't stop!!! maybe that's not all a bad thing!!
02/06/2012 13:05:55 Melanie Hensley from US: our team is so over "worship" devotionals
02/06/2012 13:06:35 Melanie Hensley from US: but loved the Must Haves
02/06/2012 13:08:10 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: we are doing a Psalm Study (Walter Bruggeman's little "Spirituallity of the Psalms") during the sermon time of the 2nd service. digging into the world behind Israel's worship list has been really powerful in forming our identity as worship leaders!
02/06/2012 13:10:01 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: where in Ohio are you doing seminars, and is there somewhere to sign up for e-mails about them?
02/06/2012 13:10:39 Autumn Wall from Indianapolis: gotta go. thank you so much!!! GREAT webinar!
02/06/2012 13:10:50 Martha Garmon from Fremont, NE: Thanks! See you next time!
02/06/2012 13:10:53 lance buchanon from peachtree city,GA: Thanks Jon! Gotta run.
02/06/2012 13:10:55 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: Michigan Needs Seminars!
02/06/2012 13:11:37 gayle graening from nashville tn: Thank you, Jon! This was very helpful for us!
02/06/2012 13:11:47 Randy Vandemark from Berea Ohio: Thanks Jon. I pray God will bless you 10 fold for the time you have given us!
02/06/2012 13:13:19 Christopher Ford from UK: Wanna come to UK?!? He he... Thanks - my first webinar.. Good stuff
02/06/2012 13:13:29 Chris Platt from Antioch, CA: great webinar today! lots of great ideas from everyone and from you, looking forward to the next topic!
02/06/2012 13:13:35 nathan hannum from hudsonville, MI: thanks jon!
02/06/2012 13:13:37 Brian S. Young from Columbus, OH: Thanks! Good Stuff!!
02/06/2012 13:13:50 steph: Thanks! Great stuff
02/06/2012 13:13:51 Amy Quillin from San Antonio, TX: thank you jon
02/06/2012 13:13:53 Scott A. Gorman from Morgantown, WV: thanks Jon!
02/06/2012 13:13:55 Matthew Starner from Grand Rapids, Michigan: Thanks!!
02/06/2012 13:14:00 (Private to Presenters) - Jerry Thomason from Charleston Illinois: Thanks!
02/06/2012 13:14:07 Melanie Hensley from US: thanks!
02/06/2012 13:14:11 Josh Dahm from Grimes, IA: Thanks much, Jon! Always enjoy your blogs, etc!
02/06/2012 13:14:18 nathan hannum from hudsonville, MI: both chat AND content were good Jon
